The general of English dnb and jungle scene comes to Ljubljana for the first time. In Gala Hala, where else. We are talking about the great artist, who is on the top of music industry for more than 25 years, wordly known by the name General Levy.
Legendary UK Ragga jungle artist and UK soundsystem veteran MC General Levy, icon in the UK’s urban music scene since the late 80s and early 90s, grew up influenced by reggae music and black culture and was enabled to build up a consistent musical culture: from ska to rock steady, calypso to soul music, hip-hop to reggae music.
A north London youth began his career as DJ, working his way through Vigilante, Java and Robbo Ranx‘s Tipatone sound systems. His next move was to south London where Gussie P, Fashion Records‘s resident engineer, released his debut album, where Levy shared honours with Jamaican superstar DJ Capleton . »Double Trouble« highlighted both Levy’s and Capleton’s different styles and approaches, spanning Jamaican and UK traditions. His popularity was boosted by numerous ‘specials’ for sound systems and he finally came to the public’s attention in a big way with »Original Length & Strength« on Fashion Records.
He managed to clock up a mainstream hit with Renk Records with M Beat on the single Incredible in 1994, a world success achieving top ten status in the national mainstream charts. Song was synchronized in the movies »Ali G Indahouse« and »Seuls Two«.
General Levy worked with various producers such as Sly & Robbie and Sting International, Shaggy, Steelie & Cleevie, Artful Dodger, Jetstar, Ajang, Joe Grind, Gussie P, Stingray, Heartical Record, Mad Professor, to name few. His live shows have to be experienced to be believed, as he explodes all over the stage, arms and legs flailing accompanied by non-stop, infectious, raucous rhyming.
General Levy remains a Lionheart artist riding through the ups and downs of the music industry and still maintains focus: love and joy for the business and people. And just like a fine wine he is getting better with the time and brings the fire to any place he performs at!
General Levy will share the stage with Joe Ariwa, Mad Professor‘s son. Together they created two albums, a few singles and are working on the third album. Joe collaborated with many legends like Horace Andy, Dennis Bovell, Earl 16 and of course Mad Professor.
We also prepared diverse line up of Slovenian artists. Tadiman, celebrating 20 years of music activity, will show how his new album is evolving. Intro is in Ohoroho domain – he also takes credit for this visit of General Levy and Joe Ariwa and LionShine will serve us gems of jungle, but juicy drum & bass will not be missed as well.
For drum & bass fans we invited up-and-coming DJs: Rak3ta, DJ on roller skates, originates in liquid drum & bass and roller skates in other similar genres as jungle. She is also active in organizing party projects like RUSH, R3K4; Damn, gurl! and known for fresh group project TWIST. After her, Peree will take over. She is now a regularity on events of Basolovka and is a member of Basolovka Crew. Peree is one of initiators of newly established radio show Basolovka Drum & Bass Mixshow with LionShine as radio presenter and will run every first Friday of the month on Radio Nula from 9pm to 10pm.
